Not seeing what all the fuss is about…
Honestly, I was surprised when everyone started freaking out about how “bad” the ‘Cats’ trailer was – because I was completely blown away by how well done it was. I expected far less. Far, FAR less. Haven’t seen it yet? Here it is:
I loved the trailer, personally. I was so excited after watching it because I hadn’t expected Hollywood to do a very good job with this one. It’s hard enough to capture the emotion and art of it all on the stage. There are a ton of characters, all with totally different personalities and storylines. They’re as complex as people, but they’re still only animals – emotion has to be captured in the face and body movement to include the tails and ears of the characters. Cats are also smaller in the Human world, and so the size of their surroundings affects what they do and how as well. And then, to top it all off, some hard-hitting musical numbers in there take an amazing set of pipes to sing. I saw all of this in the trailer.
And yet, people freaked out. Why?
I mean, c’mon people, it’s a musical about cats. You’re either going to have people dressed up as cats (which is usually pretty creepy regardless), or you’re going to have cartoon or lifelike CGI cats voiced by people. That’s the way it is. Does it look nuts? Yes. So does the musical. Have you SEEN the costumes these people wear on stage?
Ask yourself instead these questions:
Does it have emotion?
Does Jennifer Hudson own ‘Memory’ as Grizabella?
Does it look like it’s trying to stay true to the point of the work, which is a musical about cats living their life?
Does it look like the cast is thoroughly enjoying themselves while creating this?
If your answers to these questions are “yes” as mine were, then let the fur thing go. If your answer was “no”, then don’t watch the movie – it’s not for you.
LET. PEOPLE. ENJOY. THINGS.
Not everyone has or will have the pleasure of being able to see ‘Cats’ onstage. This is the next best thing, and I’m here for it.
So does the fur look creepy? Yeah, a little bit. But, again, you’re watching a movie with people dressed as cats. It could be worse.
